Jonathan Foust, MA, CSA, is a guiding teacher with the Insight Meditation Community of Washington and a founder of the Meditation Teacher Training Institute in Washington. He is a senior teacher and former president of Kripalu Center. He has been teaching, guiding intensive retreats and teaching teachers of meditation for 45 years, and he is the creator of the Year of Living Mindfully.
His work is body-centered inquiry, meditation and spiritual transformation. He presents a method for tapping deep wisdom through the body, combining mindfulness meditation, focusing and intuitive inquiry. He offers talks, guided meditations, classes, individual sessions, retreats and trainings. He also leads daylong and weeklong retreats, including Vipassana retreats and a Kripalu program on meditation, focusing and intuition, and he works one-to-one with people drawn to healing and spiritual awakening. Each week he gives a guided meditation and dharma talk, offered freely and supported by donations.
Jonathan grew up on a Pennsylvania Dutch farm. His parents were active Quakers, and the idea of "the still, small voice within" was part of his childhood. At a Quaker boarding school he learned transcendental meditation and first experienced yoga. After graduate school he taught high school for a year in New Mexico, then joined the Peace Corps, teaching phonetics at the University of Niamey in Niger. Back in the United States, he stopped at the Kripalu Yoga ashram in Pennsylvania for lunch and stayed for 24 years. There he studied with many teachers and honed his skills as a body-centered teacher and counselor. He later helped create a new ecumenical, nonsectarian program center honoring all traditions and served for a number of years as its president.
His training includes certification as a Focusing trainer, 500-hour Kripalu Yoga, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Community Dharma Leadership at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, and several bodywork and healing modalities. He lives outside Washington, DC, with his wife, Tara Brach, and their dogs.
Worth Knowing
Jonathan Foust is a meditation teacher with four and a half decades of intensive practice and teaching experience, currently serving as a guiding teacher with the Insight Meditation Community of Washington and founder of the Meditation Teacher Training Institute in Washington. He is a former president and senior teacher of Kripalu Center, where he spent 24 years deepening his understanding of yoga, body-centered inquiry, and spiritual transformation. Rather than limiting himself to a single modality, Foust has woven together mindfulness meditation, focusing practice, intuitive inquiry, and various healing modalities into a distinctive teaching approach. He created the Year of Living Mindfully, a framework that brings contemplative practice into daily life beyond the meditation cushion. People are drawn to Foust's work because he combines substantial institutional experience—including shaping policy at Kripalu—with a deeply personal, body-centered approach to awakening, and because he offers sustained community and accessible entry points through weekly free guided meditations and dharma talks supported by donations. His work appeals to serious practitioners, teacher trainees, and those seeking to integrate meditation and healing into everyday life rather than compartmentalize it as separate from the body and its wisdom.
