Where to Start with Michael: A Beginner's Guide

The best entry point

Start with the video Roundabout, made in 2010 during Michael Namkung's residency at North Dakota State University, supported by the James Rosenquist Artist Residency. It is a compact piece of his central idea: drawing and athletic effort are the same activity. Watch it before reading anything about him. It shows his method, and the explanations make more sense afterward.

One caution on sourcing. The Spotify catalog under this name (Weihnachtsklassiker, Best Broadway Hits, Birdwatching, Mundial 2026 and similar compilations) looks like a different artist's material, or at least has nothing to do with the practice described in his biography. Don't start there. His work lives in video, live performance, drawing and writing.

The next three places

1. The essay "Drawing for Sport." After Roundabout, read how he frames the work in his own words. The title states the thesis: drawing treated as a sport, with training, stakes and endurance.

2. The essay "Where the pencil meets the road." This is the companion piece. Read it second, because the title promises friction, the point where intention meets physical reality.

**3. The one-man show Good Pain: The Art of Being Hurt.** If you can find a performance or documentation, this is the fullest expression of the work, combining poetry, performance art and the body under strain. Seeing The Invisible, his other one-man show, is the natural follow-up.

Also look for the wall sits, pendulum pieces and enso pieces. They are the physical, repeatable forms the larger shows grow from.

What to expect

Expect a hybrid. Michael is an artist, poet, father and world champion athlete, inducted into the Ultimate Hall of Fame, and the Drawing Gym Workshop, which combines art with extreme sports, is the foundation of everything else. You'll meet work where endurance is the medium and the drawing is a record of what the body did. It has been shown in serious venues, including SFMOMA, The Drawing Center and Grace Cathedral. It is not a spectator sport or a gym class. It sits somewhere between the two, and it asks for patience.

Common misunderstandings

"It's an athlete doing art as a gimmick." The athletics are the method, not a hook. The discipline of the sport is what shapes the marks and the poems.

"It's about toughness." A title like Good Pain might suggest machismo, but the subject is being hurt, which is a more vulnerable position than winning.

"The label says meditation teacher, so it must be calm wellness content." Some listings describe his role that way. The documented work is closer to attention under strain than to relaxation. Come for focus, not for comfort.

"I should start with the music." See above. The streaming catalog is not the way in.

When it lands hardest

I can't say how the work lands for any particular person, but its themes suggest a few moments. It tends to suit people stuck in a creative block who need a physical way back in. It also suits people dealing with injury, chronic pain or a body that no longer cooperates, and parents or midlife readers renegotiating what effort and ambition mean. If you sit at a desk all day and miss using your body, it will probably hit you too.

A one-week starter plan

Day 1: Watch Roundabout once with no distractions, then write down what you noticed.

Day 2: Read "Drawing for Sport." Underline the claim you most doubt.

Day 3: Read "Where the pencil meets the road." Compare it with your Day 2 notes.

Day 4: Look at the wall sit, pendulum and enso pieces. Choose the one you find most puzzling.

Day 5: Do your own version: hold a wall sit as long as you can while drawing something on paper with a pencil. Notice how the line changes as you tire.

Day 6: Find documentation or a recording of Good Pain: The Art of Being Hurt and watch as much as you can.

Day 7: Rewatch Roundabout. Then write one page: what you misjudged on Day 1, and whether you want to see Seeing The Invisible next.
